Dinamo's matches with Azerbaijani teams has a long history. In 1926, our team played its first home and away matches against Baku. On January 6, the hosts won the match against local Dinamo in Baku. 3 days later Dinamo Baku made progress and won 3-0.
Dinamo and Neftchi have played 52 official matches against each other (Soviet Championship). Tbilisi won for 25 times and Baku won for 11 times. The goal difference is in favor of Dinamo 75/48.
The first match ended 0-0 in 1949, and the last match was won by Dinamo 2-0 in 1988. Since then, Dinamo has beaten the Azerbaijani club twice and both times this club turned out to be Gabala. In 2015, in the first qualifying round of the Europa League, Dinamo won 2-1 at home (Javid Husseinov answered the goals of Jaba Jighauri and Giorgi Papunashvili with an accurate shot), but lost the match 0-2 (goals were scored by Asif Mammadov and Olex Antonov). In 2019, the first match of the second qualifying round of the same tournament was held in Gabala and ended with a 2-0 victory for Dinamo (Levan Kutalia and Arfan Dafe). The return match was won by Tbilisi 3-0 (Levan Shengelia's double was added by Kwame Karikari). Dinamo has met two more Azerbaijani clubs in official matches - once against Temp Baku and twice against Dynamo Kirovobad.
